Medical school doesn’t cover disaster training.

You didn’t go to years of school and advanced training to be ill-equipped to use your skills in a disaster. Still, traditional medical training doesn’t teach disaster readiness. There’s one more step for you to be truly prepared to respond with confidence.

BECOME CERTIFIED IN DISASTER MEDICINE.

People will look to you in the face of disaster.

Apply your skills to the unexpected.

The International Board of Disaster Medicine (IBODM) is the first organization to offer disaster medicine certification to physicians—worldwide.

We train and certify physicians, nurses, and pre-hospital professionals to apply the skills you already have to a disaster. Upon your certification, you’ll join a worldwide community of providers who are trained and ready with a cohesive response when the unexpected happens.

How it works.

STEP 1

Take inventory of your current readiness.

If you’ve already had disaster medicine training (DM fellowship, PhD in DM, etc.), we’ll evaluate your experience and advise if educational requirements remain. If you’re new to disaster medicine, welcome! We’ll guide you, too.

STEP 2

Get training in the areas you need.

Our online school, the Disaster Medicine Institute, offers a series of trainings to help you apply your expertise as a physician to disasters.

STEP 3

Pass an exam and get credentialed.

Credentials are about far more than a patch on your jacket. They mean that you’re part of the movement that’s professionalizing disaster medicine.

UPHOLD THE HIGHEST STANDARDS IN ALL SITUATIONS.

BE THE CALM IN THE CHAOS.

Know your role.

As physicians, it’s our duty to help those in our care with the best practices available. Your training and certification equips you for:

Mitigation

Understand how to prevent disasters from happening in your own backyard.

Preparedness

Fortify yourself and your community for crisis situations that can’t be mitigated.

Response

Know exactly how to lead people through the immediate aftermath of a disaster.

Recovery

Learn how to support restoration efforts following a crisis.

BE THE CALM IN THE CHAOS.

You might still be wondering…

What are the eligibility requirements that must be met for a person to take the exam without doing the education?

If you’ve not already had disaster medicine training (Disaster Medicine fellowship, Masters or PhD in Disaster Medicine, etc.), we’ll evaluate your experience and advise if educational requirements remain.

What does the exam cover?

The exam is made of questions directly from Ciottone’s Disaster Medicine Textbook.

How long until I get the exam results?

You will be notified of your results within two business days.

What does recertification look like? How many years should it be good for?
The certification is good for five years. Board Certification requires certified disaster medicine providers take an exam every five years as well as meet the recertification requirements below.
– Recertification requires the candidate to demonstrate proof of work in the field since certification or to meet the standard twenty-five hours of disaster Preparedness (could be CMEs or disaster education or deployment/response to a Disaster per year they can prove)
If I fail the exam, can I retest?

Candidates can retest up to 2 times for a total of 3 attempts.  After the 3rd attempt candidates must begin the process from the beginning.

How much does it cost?

The application fee for the certification costs $200

The certification test fee is $1000
